“I get a lot of ideas for paintings while I’m driving my car, and I think this is because the windscreen of a car with its constantly changing view is intrinsically cinematic, and I have begun to think about the paint chips as cinema screens. With this painting I set out to paint the blurry glow of a green traffic light as it hits the wet windscreen of a car at night, but the painting really started to come together when I painted the distant lights coming up from the ground in the background on the left. I like that they hint at a sense of something unknown, which is happening outside of the confines of the car or the painting. It’s not clear what it is, but it’s optimistic and comforting and we’re driving towards it.”

The Traffic Lights, painted directly onto the Farrow & Ball paint chip for Down Pipe, is an original miniature painting by Rachel Spelling. The painting is 2cm x 3cm and it is served on a strip of twelve beautiful colours on the iconic Farrow & Ball colour card, which measures 7.4cm x 21cm.

This painting is signed and dated on the back, it will be accompanied by a signed and embossed certificate of authenticity and posted in a sturdy gift box.
